A Big Delta Blues Festival Shout Out

I want to thank Frank "Frankie G" Giovanni for another fine Delta Blues Festival. His friend David Williamson started this festival way back in 1999. After Dave's tragic death in 2003 "Frank G" picked it up and has kept his friends dream alive for the last 12 years. Frank works on this event all year long. Blues fans from all over the bay area flock to Waldie Plaza the third Saturday in September to enjoy this fine, alcohol free, event. Thank you for all your hard work. FrankieMac

Aloha Club Byron

3045 Taylor Ln. Byron, CA 94514

Aloha Club bar is open. They are still finishing up. What caught my eye is the large grassy area in the back. I hope they can keep the lawn area as nice as it is now. The Tiki tables outside are waiting for a stone surround floor so they can put chairs around the tables and not worry about customers tipping over. I noticed they have lots of outdoor lighting. This is going to be a swell place to hang out with your friends and listen to some music. I'll keep you posted.

3,500 +hp? Really

Saw this engine in a Dodge Dart last Saturday at the Bethel Island 50's Bash. Apparently the Oakley owner paid $60k for the car. All I kept thinking about was racing this car at Camp Stoneman (where LMC is now) and kicking butt. Then it dawned on me. Somebody would eventually show up with 3,800hp and send me home in 2nd place. Then you would have to decide to pony up again or get out. I'm sure some of you know this vicious cycle of addiction for more power, more power, more power. Read the story

Wyatt Street, Antioch

I found this photo on the wall at the Riverview Lodge Restaurant recently. I don't recall ever having seen it. The city changed the street names circa 1919 to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. Wyatt St. became 2nd St., The building on the right side with the view deck is the Arlington Hotel. Click photo to see it in HD

Harvest Time in Brentwood "Keep Your Windows Rolled Up"

Photos and story by Brad Bennett

Safflower fields in Brentwood were being harvested as I was heading out of town recently. Three International 1470 combines were making laps around the hills by Balfour Road and Deer Valley Road.

The International Harvester 1470, also known as the "Hillside Harvester" can handle grades of up to 48% and can hold about 145 bushels before needing to be emptied.

Safflower has many uses. It goes into coloring and flavoring of foods, as well as medicines. It also is used for the making of red and yellow dyes but primarily it is cultivated for the vegetable oil extracted from its seeds. The flower itself, sometimes called "Bastard Saffron" can be a cheap substitute for the very expensive saffron.

These bustling machines have the field mice, ground squirrels and wild rabbits scurrying for a safer place to be, but that is a fresh meal for the numerous red tailed hawks that soar all around this harvesting operation, much like the cloud of seagulls following a fishing ship.

A very interesting harvesting task to observe, just make sure you are not down wind!
