Saturday, April 28, 2009 was brewing day for the DELTA BREWING CLUB. Members of the club, were invited to club founder Pat Meadows' house, to prepare their brews for entry at this years' CONTRA COSTA COUNTY FAIR, May 28th - 31st, which they've won many times. The process starts with heating up water, adding a liquid malt extract and "brewing sacks" of hops and grains for flavor. The brew process takes about an hour. After brewing, the grain sacks are removed and a copper coil cooling system is placed in the brew pot. Tap water is run through the coil to cool the beer down. It's then poured into a fermentation tank. A brewers yeast is added and then the tank is sealed with a pop-off fermentation stopper. The fermentation process is generally about two weeks with some beers improving with more age. Batch size is typically 5 gallons, enough for 2 1/2 cases of beer. Ingredients run $25 to $30 per batch, about a buck a beer, so folks don't do this to save money on beer, but for the joy of making it themselves.
